Mid Conference Excursion 1

The Salt of Perm Krai — from the ancient times to present.

The excursion comprises the two periods of the development of the Upper Kama salt deposit. The first period (from XV to XX centuries) was connected with rock salt (halite) production. Brine was pumped due to wells and boiling in open pans. The Permian salt was  world famous due to its pure quality. The city of Solikamsk was a center of salt production. There are the buildings of the 17th and 18th centuries preserved in the city.

The second period of field exploitation was begun from the 30-th years of XX century, when Potash Deposit was discovered and potash mining was actively developed. This deposit is one of the largest potash deposits in the world. The ore contains from 18 to 34% KCl. There are geological reserves of carnallite of up to 96.4 billion tons, of sylvinite of up to 112.2 billion tons and of halite of up to 4.65 trillion tons. Annual production of potassium-magnesium salts is about 40 million tons.  You will learn about the history of the development of the potash deposit in the Museum PAO “Uralkali”.
